General Practice Training Tasmania (GPTT) offers interesting training possibilities combined with an excellent lifestyle in a beautiful state. It is known for its high quality, well organised program, including unique educational experiences.
GP Registrar Experience
GPTT’s operations cover the whole state, with the Head Office being in Hobart. While there is a state-wide approach to training, there are GP registrar and medical educator groups in sub-regions around Devonport, Launceston and Hobart. Training is geared to individual needs with GP registrars taking up exciting opportunities. Along with its broad, strong educational program, GPTT is known for the following areas of special educational interest and expertise.
Expedition Medicine
GPTT’s Expedition Medicine Special Skills Post is attractive to many GP registrars. It provides innovative and exciting emergency training in wilderness locations in Tasmania. This is combined with clinical training in emergency and travel medicine. Career pathway and university credentialing is being developed towards a qualification in Polar medicine in collaboration with the Australian Government Antarctic Division. This Special Skills Post has strong relevance to GPs preparing to practice in remote areas.
Integrated communication skills training
Communication, consulting and counselling skills training has become a key feature of the Tasmanian program. GP registrars place great value on this integrated program delivered by medical educators with special interests in this area.
Highly regarded suite of practical skills workshops
GPTT delivers a program for practical skills development with an emphasis on relevance to general practice.
Surgical Training in the Clinical Habitat (STITCH) – plastic surgery and trauma surgical skills in general practice
Emergencies in general practice – Basic
Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Approach to Medical EmergenciesMusculoskeletal medicine – practical
hands-on management of musculoskeletal diseases in general practiceWomen’s health – incorporating practical skills
Teaching skills for GP registrars
There is an emphasis on GP registrars attaining competency and mastery of knowledge and skills at the end of workshops providing optimum examination preparation.
Research opportunities
Many Tasmanian GP registrars are taking up Academic Special Skills Posts and
undertake research. This works particularly well in Tasmania because GPTT has
strong links with the University of Tasmania.
The Geographic Region
Just one hour from Melbourne by plane, Tasmania is a land apart, a place of wilderness and beautiful landscapes, pristine beaches and welcoming people.
With a wonderful relaxed lifestyle in a temperate climate and destination for the famous annual Sydney to Hobart yacht race, Tasmania offers the adventure of a lifetime.
Experience a culture rich in the arts, music, theatre, sport and recreation
and events including the “Taste of Tasmania” one of the state’s food and wine
extravaganzas. Another event “Ten Days on the Island”
offers a unique celebration of island culture that firmly places Tasmania on
the world stage.
Tasmania is a family friendly state with relatively short distances between
major centres which means that education, recreation, shopping and commercial
services are all within easy reach.
